Staged New Construction May Be Targeted by Thieves

posted: 11/19/2018

If you stage new construction, be aware that a few of our members have had their staging furniture and accessories stolen, and local law enforcement believes an organized theft ring may be responsible.  Furniture is easy to steal from new construction since a truck being loaded with furniture will likely not look suspicious.

We are told the thieves are using Open Houses as their opportunity to case a home.  Police believe they are posing as buyers, entering open houses, then unlocking a window they can enter later to gain access to a door.

If you stage new construction in our market, you might want to put some processes in place to make it more difficult for criminals to gain access.

  1. Require visitors to sign in (of course, thieves will not give their real names)
  2. Check all accessible windows after a showing to ensure they are locked.
  3. Ask the builder to consider installing cameras
  4. Ask the builder to keep the alarm ON after hours.
